German-Turkish Histories of Education in the 19 and 20th centuries

1. January 2021 Unkategorisiert

I dedicate a large part of my research to analyzing the German-Turkish history of education in the 19th and 20th centuries, which includes different perspectives and research interests.

Reform and Cultural and Educational Interdependencies in Istanbul (1908-1918):
In another research project, I collaborated with Ingrid Lohmann on the Osmanischer Lloyd, a German- and French-language daily newspaper published in Istanbul (Constantinople) under the direction of the German Foreign Office from 1908 to 1918. We focus on the cultural and educational policy commentaries of the editor-in-chief and philologist Friedrich Schrader, who spent nearly half of his life in the Ottoman Empire. As a cosmopolitan, philologist, and orientalist, he played a significant role during the social and political transformations of the Ottoman Empire, and we highlight his independent positions within the Lloyd. Our research results were published in 2025 by Julius Klinkhardt in Open Access as a commented source edition.

Analysis of Pedagogical Knowledge about the Ottoman Empire (1839-1918):
In my dissertation, which is Open Access, I was interested in what ideas and knowledge circulated and were disseminated in pedagogical sources, mainly history textbooks, from a postcolonial perspective. These texts contributed to stereotypes that outlived their time. The dissertation is part of a comprehensive series of publications on German-Turkish educational history.
